SharePoint 2010 Configuration Error “Failed to register SharePoint services”

I was installing SharePoint 2010 on a new farm and after installation I started the configuration wizard and failed in step 5 , I got this error Failed to register SharePoint services. An exception of type System.TypeLoadException was thrown. Additional exception information: Could not load type 'Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Administration.SearchWebServiceManagerService' from assembly 'Microsoft.Office.Server.Search, Version=14.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71E9BCE111E9429C'. What is the hell is that? I tried to search and found many people are talking in the same issue but no answer, finally I found the answer in few posts, the solution for this problem is very weird, you have to delete to key from windows registry to be able to complete the configuration, what is that? I did it and it works with me but honestly I don’t like this solution and wish not to find such error in the final product So now what are these 2 keys? 1. Open the run and type regedit 2. Remove the following 2 keys 3. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\14.0\WSS\Services\Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Administration.SearchWebServiceManagerService] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\14.0\WSS\ServiceProxies\Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Administration.SearchWebServiceManagerServiceProxy] 4. Enjoy

Don’t say “MOSS” for SharePoint 2010 and Say “Microsoft SharePoint Server”

We used to say “MOSS” for SharePoint 2007 stands for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server but now we can’t say that about SharePoint 2010 because it’s not under the office family anymore so it became Microsoft SharePoint Server. Also we can’t say “MSS” because its reserved to “Microsoft Search Server” so welcome Microsoft SharePoint Server and goodbye MOSS

Playing with SharePoint 2010 installation

As you know that SharePoint 2010 needs windows server 64 2008 and I’m using windows 7 so I tried to find if I can install SharePoint 2010 on windows 7 or not, one of my friends “Ramy Abd Elmonaem” told me yes you can I sent me this article http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee554869(office.14).aspx and we tried both to install it because he did it on his laptop and it works, but unfortunately it doesn’t work with me I don’t know why? I did all the steps but failed to install it so what can I do now? I’ve a session after few days and I’ve to work on physical machine “because I hate the virtuals :)” so I decided to install windows server 2008 R2 on my laptop, Yes, I installed it beside windows 7 so I’ve now on my laptop both windows 7 and windows 2008 and I installed sharepoint 2010 on windows 2008 and it works now very well with me and I’m ready for my next session.
I was worry from installing windows 2008 on my small laptop because of the performance but I found it very fast and many of my friends like it as a very stable windows with very powerful tools.
So now I’ve windows 7 on my laptop for fun and windows 2008 server for fun too.

End of support to MOSS 2007 without SP2

By Stefan Goßner

Here is some information from the Microsoft lifecycle page for WSS 3.0:

Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Service Pack 1 11/12/2007 Support ends 12 months after the next service pack releases or at the end of the product's support lifecycle, whichever comes first. For more information, please see the service pack policy athttp://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/#ServicePackSupport.

WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 SP2 has been released on April 28th, 2009.

Based on the above listed information support for SharePoint servers without SP2 will end on April 28th, 2010. Be sure to evaluate Service Pack 2 now if you have not yet done and ensure to install it before the deadline.

As we had some support cases on this in the past: be sure to install SP2 not only for WSS and MOSS but also for all installed language packs for these products.
